ELVIS ENSURES THE SECURE RELEASE OF VEHICLES
11/2009
Staffordshire Police are the first force to take advantage of utilising a link between ELVIS-PF and ELVIS-VR to help keep uninsured drivers with forged documents off the road.
The combined system helps officers ensure that seized vehicles held by garage contractors are not released unless the correct driver documents have been produced.
This means garages can ensure that release documents have not been forged and the driver picking up the vehicle is the same person who attended the police station. The new integrated vehicle management system features an electronic database for recording details of drivers' documents.
It automatically collects vehicle and keeper information from the Police National Computer (PNC), as well as driver licence information from the Drivers Database and insurance details from the Motor Insurance Database (MID). This allows officers to detect fraudulent and out-of-date documents and licences instantly.
Prior to the new link between ELVIS-PF and ELVIS-VR garages had to rely on paper release notices issued to members of the public who presented their documents at a police station. The new system automatically alerts vehicle recovery departments and garages as soon as the production of documents have been completed.
The combined system is already proving to be of real benefit to Staffordshire Police. Allan Edwards, Staffordshire Police Vehicle Recovery Manager, said:
"The software system greatly reduces the amount of paperwork generated and makes the process of releasing vehicles far more secure."
